About the Performers:
Manticore is an experimental music collaboration between Zoe Alexis-Abrams (vocals) and David Jones (guitar, analogue electronics), which crystallized in the dark months of 2013. The duo rely on free improvisation to construct emotional and intense compositions, forged through the interplay of the moment. Zoe’s vocal work seeks to dismantle language, stripping away syntax to the intimate level of pure form, straddling variously the gargantuan, rhythmic, intimate and flowing. Underneath this lies the layers of droning, effect-laden guitar work of David, floating between vulnerability and desolation. Live performances strive to capture the play and openness of improvisation whilst presenting Manitcore’s compositions in familiar form.
Since forming in 2013, Manticore has supported artists such as Mind Over Mirrors (Chicago), Koen Holtkamp (NYC), Not the Wind Not the Flag (Toronto), Steve Baczynski (Buffalo), Gordon Ashworth (Portland), WORK/DEATH (Rhode Island), Jooklo Duo (Italy), Eyvind Kang & Jessika Kenney, Silver Apples, Mykki Blanco and Nihilist Spasm Band. In June 2014, their piece “Hekate” was featured on “The Many Moods of Healing Power” cassette compilation, released by Healing Power Records. Their first full-length release is upcoming in January 2016.Bandcamp: http://manticore.bandcamp.com/
Kaie Kellough is a Montréal-based word-sound systemizer. His systems originate in the inchoate swirl of vowels, consonants, misspellings, shapes, stammerings, and emerge as audio recordings, books, visual entities, volumes of letters, and performances that verse and reverse utterance.
Kaie’s work fuses formal experiment and social engagement. Kaie is the author of two books of poetry Lettricity (Cumulus Press 2004), and Maple Leaf Rag (Arbeiter Ring Publishing 2010), and two sound recordings: Vox:Versus (WOW 2011), and Creole Continuum (HOWL! 2014). Kaie performs and publishes internationally, and is presently working on a novel. Website: http://kaie.ca/
